Permaculture Farm For Sustainable Living

Question: Living off the Grid: Would you like to live in the Caribbean?

Hey, I was wondering if there are like minded folks out there who wouldn’t mind living in the caribbean. I have some real estate down there and want to develop it. I’m tired of living in NA and working for people and becoming a slave to the system. I would like to practice Permaculture and sustainable living. I’m going there in late spring to fence it and put a road in place. I will then need to arrange the land for agriculture and different farming ventures. I’m thinking about self sufficiency first and then into the tourist industry. If you are interested I could fill you in on more details.

Answer: Too many hurricanes in the Caribbean.

Question: Hi, Are there any poultry, livestock & sundry auction markets in the Wynyard,Burnie,Stanley or Smithton area?

We have 7 acres of land in Montumana and we’re looking to live a Permaculture life. We would like to build a strawbale home with a dam, rainwater tanks and off grid solar power & wind power. We would also like to buy some livestock from an auction market.Does anyone know where we could find some which sells chickens, ducks, geese, cows, sheep and goats? Thanks Russell & Wendy Goss

Answer: I’m not familiar with anything in that area of the state, all I can suggest is contacting companies like Ruralco/Roberts or Elders they tend to conduct livestock auctions, also people at some local rural markets may be able to give your some guidance
The Advocate would also have listings for livestock on Saturday

Question: how to get funding/land for community garden?

Does anyone have any idea of different ways i could get funding to create a community garden or Permaculture center in my neighborhood? There is a very sad piece of property across the street from me for sale cheap that i would love to turn into a Permaculture center/public garden..i did read something about registering as a non profit organization and getting a grant ? Or mayb a fundraiser? Any information would be appreciated. My searches aren’t turning up anything.

Answer: In our area these programs are handled by our County Parks department. Initially, they will say that they have no money to buy land. However, most Counties have funds that are earmarked for community capital projects so don’t take “no” for an answer. Begin with the County commissioner in your area. Enlist the local media, if they will listen to you, to get the word out that you want to spearhead this project. You may find that Rotary, Lions, Soroptimists, or Kiwanis will help you. Try all of them. Perhaps you can even get the price down further if there is some open space/donation write-off the current own can make.
